The energy transition needs more than ambition

Factor was founded by a team who spent over a decade in the energy industry and were tired of watching smart people work around tools that weren't built for the job. Factor became the solution.

The gap we found
Our story
The energy market has always been complex. But the pace of change over the last decade has rapidly increased. Distributed energy resources, battery storage, EVs, solar, demand response. The products retailers need to build and price are more sophisticated than ever, and the commercial stakes have never been higher.

Most of the tools available to pricing teams weren't designed for any of this. They were built for a simpler market and stretched over time to handle complexity they were never meant to carry.

Factor was built to solve that problem. Not adapted. Not retrofitted. Designed specifically for the pricing and forecasting challenges that modern energy retailers face every day.
Ambition needs tools
Why it matters
By 2050, global electricity demand is forecast to double. Distributed energy resources will be central to how that demand is met, and the retailers who can build accurate, flexible products around DER will be the ones that lead the transition.

That requires pricing and forecasting capability that reflects the real complexity of how energy is now being produced, stored, and consumed. Factor exists to give retailers that tooling, so the commercial infrastructure keeps pace with the transition it needs to support.
LeadErship
Built by people who know the market
Factor was built by people who'd spent years inside the energy industry, watching pricing teams work around tools that weren't built for the job.
Jessica Venning-Bryan
Co-founder and Managing Director
Jessica spent over a decade working at the forefront of the New Zealand energy market, including senior roles at Flick Electric and Flux Federation, before co-founding Factor. She brought a deep understanding of what energy retailers actually need to compete, and the conviction that the tooling available to pricing teams was overdue for a rethink.

At Factor, Jessica leads commercial strategy, market development, and the relationships that have taken the platform into three international markets in its first year of operation.
Simon Pohlen
Co-founder and CTO
Simon's background is in building technology for complex, data-heavy environments, with experience across the energy sector before co-founding Factor. He is the architect of the Factor platform, having designed the technical foundations that allow it to handle the scale and complexity of modern energy pricing, across markets, products, and operating contexts.

At Factor, Simon leads product and engineering, with a focus on building something that is modern, scalable and built for the future of energy.

Our milestones
Factor launched in June 2025. Within the first year, the platform had been onboarded by customers in two international markets and was actively operating across three. The response from the market confirmed what the team had believed from the start: the problem was real, the timing was right, and the product worked.

Factor is an AWS partner and a Salesforce partner, integrating with the CRMs, billing systems, and data platforms that energy businesses already rely on.
Joining Gentrack
Gentrack acquisition
In 2026, Factor was acquired by Gentrack Group (NZX/ASX: GTK) for NZ$24 million, with a further NZ$10 million earnout. Gentrack is a leading provider of software to utilities and airports across ANZ and EMEA, with a customer base that gives Factor the reach to deploy its technology at the scale the market demands.

‍"Pricing is one of the most critical capabilities for retailer success in today's volatile energy markets. From the moment I saw Factor's technology and met Jessica, I knew this was the company that would bring great value to both Gentrack and our customers."
Gary Miles, CEO, Gentrack
Global Presence
Where we work
Factor is headquartered in Wellington, New Zealand, with an office in the United Kingdom and team members across Australia and Asia. We work with energy businesses globally.
How we work
Our culture
We are a small team from energy, software, and commercial backgrounds, and we care a lot about getting the details right. We move at pace without sacrificing accuracy, build in ways that keep our customers in control of their own work, and make complex things as straightforward as we can.

We believe software is central to enabling a brighter energy future, and we take that seriously in how we work, what we build, and how we show up for our customers. The problems we are solving are genuinely hard, and that attracts people who want to do their best work on something that matters.
